Born and raised in Bethany, Dr. Gering earned his B.S. in psychology from Oklahoma City University before being admitted to the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida. With an emphasis in Clinical Child Psychology, he earned both his M.S. and PhD in Clinical and Health psychology at UF. His doctoral research focused on gender-based differences in autism diagnostic rates among young children in both clinical and community settings.
Dr. Gering returned to his home state for predoctoral residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) in the Child Maltreatment track. With a focus on rural, underserved, and disadvantaged populations, Dr. Gering completed trainings in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), and had the honor of being one of the psychology interns selected to complete the Interdisciplinary Training Program in Child Abuse and Neglect (ITP), working collaboratively with professionals in medicine, social work, law, and public health to address child abuse and maltreatment in Oklahoma. For specialization in addressing complex psychological presentations across development, Dr. Gering then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in private practice in Midwest City, where he continued to work providing neurodevelopmental assessments as a licensed psychologist for five years prior to opening his own private practice.
Dr. Gering draws from a wealth of expertise in child, adolescent, and adult psychology. Throughout his career, Dr. Gering has developed a diverse clinical background, working in the Child Trauma Services (CTS) clinic at OUHSC, at Sooner Pediatrics in the primary care specialty consultation service, at the Pediatric Sleep Medicine Clinic at OU Childrens, with the Problematic Sexual Behavior group at the Child Center for Abuse and Neglect, and at the OKC VA Hospital at the Ambulatory Mental Health Clinic (AMHC) and the Trauma & Deployment Recovery Services (TDRS) programs. Prior experience also includes rotations in the UF Child Hematology/Oncology clinic, the UF Craniofacial Anomaly clinic, the Child Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders clinic, and assessment-focused work at the UF Developmental Neuropsychology clinic.
An active member of several professional associations, Dr. Gering contributes to the ongoing development of psychological practices and policies in Oklahoma as a Director-at-Large for the Oklahoma Psychological Association (OPA). His academic contributions include both undergraduate and graduate teaching roles at Oklahoma City University and Southern Nazarene University, where he has guided the next generation of psychologists in a range of psychological theories and practices.
